NJ Transit temporarily eliminates train service and improves rail safety

NEW JERSEY (WABC) –

New Jersey Transit reduced rates for its services and train tickets for three months, allowing it to continue to install a critical safety upgrade, required by the federal government, for its rail systems.

Schedule changes, affecting more than two dozen trains, began on Sunday and will reach customers along the Northeast Corridor, the North Jersey Shore line, the Morris and Essex lines, and Montclair-Boonton. and main lines and counties of Bergen. The other trains in the system will have adjustments to schedules and / or station stops. These schedule adjustments are temporary and are expected to last until mid-January 2019.

Train fares will be reduced by 10% in November, December and January.

NJ Transit needs to put positive train control on all its rail systems before the end of year deadline. Positive Train Control, or PTC, uses GPS and other technologies as an emergency braking system designed to prevent train collisions and derailments due to excessive speed and trains passing through switches left in the wrong position .

In 2008, Congress-mandated railway companies fully implemented PTC to save lives. He then extended the 2015 deadline until the end of 2018.

In August, a report from the Federal Railroad Administration indicated that NJ Transit had installed only one-third of its positive train control system.

The cuts will help to make the service, already underlined by short staff and by failures of engineers, "predictive and more reliable".

Customers are strongly encouraged to check out the full NJTransit.com rail schedules for all travel options, as schedule adjustments, including departure / arrival times and station stops, will be made. throughout the system. Schedules will be available online later this month

For more information on the Positive Train Control Project, visit the NJTransit / PTC website.
