At least six people were killed by sudden floods in Aude, in southwestern France.

Local authorities say several months of rain fell in a few hours in one night, leaving roads blocked in some areas.

A woman has been swept by the Aude River, reports local broadcaster BFMTV.

Alain Thirion, prefect of Aude, said that people were stranded on rooftops and that they should be evacuated by air because it was too dangerous by boat.

One person was injured, he added, when a house collapsed in the locality of Cuxac.

Emergency services and local authorities urged residents to stay at home, signaling a red alert.

The floods are the worst that Aude has known for more than 100 years, according to the Vigicrues weather monitoring service.

In a domain, flood waters can reach seven meters (23 feet), local authorities say.

An orange flood warning has also been launched in the neighboring regions of Aveyron, Haute-Garonne, Hérault, Pyrénées-Orientales and Tarn.
