John Goodman looks forward to building a new series, ABC's "The Conners", from the wreck of the cancellation of "Roseanne" last spring, but there is clearly something – to make sure that someone – is missing.

"It was great to be back, but the center is hollow. I really miss Rosie, "said Goodman, who worked with Roseanne Barr for a nine-year run starting in 1988 and the most popular renaissance of the last year before being fired after a racist tweet last spring.

With the exception of Barr, Goodman, who plays Dan Conner, will continue to be associated with the rest of the cast (Tuesday August 8, Eastern Daylight Time / PDT), which includes Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman.

The Illinois Pass family will adapt to apparent death – confirmed by Goodman in a interview in August – irreverent matriarch Roseanne Conner, whose absence will be explained on the first Tuesday.

"The Conners" will continue to examine current issues from the working class perspective, including health care, drug use, immigration and the struggle to make ends meet.

"We are similar in that we have always wanted to stay true to this type of family and the stories they met trying to do so emotionally, financially, but hopefully people will laugh and cry sometimes," says Gilbert. . What is different now is that our matriarch is missing from the series. Our roles are redefined as they would be in a family. People integrate, relationships get stronger, people have to play a bigger role of caregiver. This allowed us to explore new stories. "

The exuberant political views of Roseanne, as well as the dynamism of her President Trump, will be absent. But a new character, son D.J. Geena (Maya Lynne Robinson), Conner's wife and former soldier, adds a different conservative perspective as an orderly and confiscated arrival in a church in Conner's under-disciplined house.

"Roseanne", an iconic hit during its first incarnation, became the most-watched TV show (with an average of 20 million viewers) and a cultural phenomenon when ABC revived it in March latest. But the network canceled the series in late May after Barr's racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Obama.

Goodman says that he was "stunned" but not irritated by the cancellation. "I tried to pretend to be calm about it and say," Well, that's show business, "but I kind of circled for a few weeks . "

Faced with a huge void in its program, the network was interested in a spin-off and the show had already been renewed for a new season, the stars were to be paid for seven episodes.

But financial problems were secondary to creative decisions, says executive producer Tom Werner. "The main actors all wanted to come back. They did not want the show to end. (But) if we did not think we could deliver really strong and funny episodes, nobody would have come back. Barr also did not remove Barr from his financial interest, a condition imposed by ABC.

Werner says that he considers the Barr family and has been in contact since his dismissal. "In my last conversation with her, she was fine," he says, predicting that she will have "mixed feelings" about the new series.

Goodman said that he was on hand immediately when Gilbert, who is also executive producer, approached him about the spinoffs. "It could be a kind of closure, I do not know," he says. "But it's good to have a chance."

Gilbert says "we have a debt to our viewers" that made the renaissance a success. "There are not enough shows on the working class and telling stories through the prism of humor, heart, love and comedy."

In the new season of 10 episodes, Darlene (Gilbert) starts a new relationship after learning that her ex-husband David (guest star Johnny Galecki) had a girlfriend (Juliette Lewis). Jackie teaches English as a second language and begins a relationship with one of his adult students. The Muslim neighbors who drew Roseanne's suspicions – and then lean back – in "Roseanne" are coming back for an episode of Halloween "Conners".

Trump's pro-Roseanne may have left, but "The Conners" will still address contemporary politics, as in an upcoming episode where young Mark (Ames McNamara), in the center, conducts an election poll, as Jackie observes (Laurie Metcalf). (Photo: Eric McCandless, ABC)

Goodman, who misses "sitting and laughing" with Barr on the set, recognizes that the new series will be different without "this center of gravity". But he is happy to be back with his colleagues. "It's like a family here. We are laughing.

He will not predict how the new show will behave. "We made impossible numbers last year, so I do not want to think about it, but if they leave us a chance and continue to follow us, who knows? I do not worry I'm just happy to be here. "
