OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Breast cancer patients in Nebraska Medicine have learned that they are not alone in their journey.
The events at the hospital for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month draw a lot of attention to the disease and the people who fight it.
The Omaha healing race has seen hundreds of people run to raise money and raise awareness in the community about breast cancer.
During the event, Nebraska Medicine officials asked people to paint stones with messages of hope and encouragement for people with breast cancer.
These rocks were donated Monday to the Buffett Cancer Center for breast cancer patients.
"I think more than anything, to know that they are not alone, neither the first nor the last to fight against this, and we all think of them, and we hope that this little act of symbolism proves to them that 'they attract a lot of people,' said Heidi Woodard of Nebraska Medicine.
In addition to the message and the race, Nebraska Medicine officials plan to introduce breast cancer patients to some survivors.
"This is a new concept allowing women to meet women who have accomplished it and to do it and discuss with health professionals their options," Woodard said.
Nebraska Medicine wants breast cancer patients to be courageous because many people are willing to offer support.
An event called the Breast Awareness Reconstruction Event, or BARE, will take place Wednesday from 6pm. at 9 pm inside the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
Breast cancer survivors will share their rebuilding reserves so that current patients can explore their best options. For more information on the event, call 402-552-2249.
