Spoilers coming for the premiere of season 7 of Arrow on the CW, called "inmate 4587."
Arrow is officially back for its seventh season on the CW, and the first proved that it would not be like all previous seasons. We had known for a long time that a new Emerald Archer would protect Star City after blocking Oliver. It is probably safe to say that most fans thought that Roy would be revealed as the new Green Arrow after the announcement of Colton Haynes' return. The premiere of Season 7 may have revealed that Roy was not the new Green Arrow, contrary to what many were hoping for.
No, I'm not saying that simply because the new Emerald Archer was not doing enough unnecessary turnarounds to become Roy. If Roy was the new Green Arrow, as many would have expected, the first would certainly have been unmasked! After all, a huge revelation on the line of a twist that we all imagined a long time ago when the first trailer arrived on the web would be a disappointment. In a few episodes, reveal that the Green Arrow is an idea that few of us could have guessed would be much more effective.
At this point, Arrow opened the door to the revelation that Green Arrow 2.0 is none other than William, Oliver's son. Now, the new guy in green who shoots arrows at the villains of Star City is not a kid in his early teens. If the new green arrow is William, he must act as a William of the future.
Now, it's Arrow, do not The flashSo we should not assume that anyone who happens to be mysterious comes from the future. Yet the Green Arrow of Season 7 was seen scratching a name from a list at his last moments of the episode while he was incubating in a dark room, which screams out " the son of Oliver Queen ". William is currently young enough to believe that he could acquire the skills to become the Green Arrow before he becomes an adult.
This still leaves the question of how exactly an adult William could attack the criminal element of Star City while his young man was busy hating his new life under the protection of witnesses. Once upon a time, the idea of a Arrow character of the future would have been absurd. Since The flash and Legends of tomorrow joined the ArrowOn the other hand, the chronological shenanigans seem to be able to influence the most successful series of the range of superheroes of The CW.
The new green arrow could definitely be William of the future. It is unclear whether the new green arrow of season 7 has anything to do with the green arrow that defended Star City as an Emerald Archer in a particularly depressing future, visited by the Legends of tomorrow crew a few years ago. This green arrow can not be an adult John Diggle Jr. unless he is the offspring of the Arrow team who has traveled back in time. Oliver's beard is about to become this depressing future goat, however.
All things considered, we absolutely can not exclude Roy from the new Green Arrow in season 7. Roy takes Oliver's place. Arrow to keep an archer in the mix, as Roy returned in season 6 and was always in Oliver's place if the situation required it. No trip in time would be necessary. However, now that we are in a new season under the guidance of a new showrunner, we should not exclude anything. William, as a new green arrow, would bring a much more epic twist than Roy under the green hood.
That said, the final scene of the episode revealed that Roy would have a role to play in season 7 without necessarily playing the role of replacing Oliver in Star City. The scenes that seemed to be flashbacks for most of the episode were finally revealedbefore who followed an adult William on a trip to Lian Yu. Since he lost his mother the first time that he was on Lian Yu, something big had to take him back to this island.
On the island, he discovered the remains of Robert Queen's grave, and the place generally looked pretty horrible. He also discovered something much more exciting: a much older Roy, who almost attacked William until he saw it well. Roy acknowledged William, indicating that the two men spent quite some time together after William began to age. This, or Roy has a strange ability to predict what the children will look like in a few decades.
What is not clear at this point is why William went to see Lian Yu, but he seemed to be looking for Roy. Does William follow in his father's footsteps and is he planning to learn the ropes of the vigilante profession from a Lian Yu mentor? Roy is not Slade Wilson, and William will probably not end up in a love triangle despite some awful hair like Oliver's with Slade and Shado. Nevertheless, the son could follow in his father's footsteps hoping to save Star City.
Unfortunately, we can only speculate at this point. My money is on William or Roy as a new green arrow, although it is not out of the possibility Arrow will go with someone wilder than Oliver's future son or his former sidekick who swaps red leather for green. We will have to wait and see. It was a solid hook for season 7 in my book, and he could keep people tuned in while the star of the series rotted in jail, possibly until the big crossover of 2018.
