United Airlines adds Hilton Head, South Carolina, to its roadmap as part of a new wave of domestic expansion of the Chicago-based carrier.

United will begin flying to Hilton Head, adding flights to the South Carolina resort from its hubs in Chicago O'Hare, Newark Liberty and Washington Dulles.

United Express United Express affiliates will operate two daily return flights from Washington as of March 31st. Service from Chicago will only be operational on Saturdays and Sundays, while Newark will be booked on Saturdays. The flights will be seasonal on all roads and should run until September 8th. Flights to Newark and Chicago will begin April 6th.

United will be only the second airline to take off from the Hilton Head Airport. American already offers American Eagle regional service to Charlotte's second busiest center.

Beyond Hilton Head, United has announced several other new routes, a new detailed service and scheduled adjustments to its two major east coast hubs: Newark Liberty and Washington Dulles.

From Newark, United will also add daily non-stop service to Pensacola, Florida. United will also increase its schedule in Anchorage, Alaska, from a Saturday-only service to a daily service. The routes will be seasonal, starting in June and ending in September.

United has announced it would be the only non-stop carrier connecting Newark to Pensacola and Hilton Head and the only one to serve Anchorage from one of the major airports in the New York area.

"We are also expanding service to major business destinations, including Detroit; Saint Louis; Kansas City, Missouri; Omaha, Nebraska; and Richmond, Virginia, "said Jill Kaplan, president of United in New York / New Jersey, about the company's plan to add flights to several existing Newark routes.

Another change will see United moving several short-haul routes from congested Newark Liberty to Washington Dulles. Elmira Air Service, New York; Lexington, Kentucky; and Manchester, New Hampshire, will move from Newark to Dulles next year. This change allows United to add new services and additional frequencies to Newark, where capacity is insufficient.

In addition to the offbeat routes, United is also adding a new route from Dulles. Flights to Asheville, North Carolina, begin Feb. 14. The Lexington route will also begin from Dulles on February 14, while Manchester-Elmira links will be relocated to Dulles on March 31.

The Dulles-Newark shift continues an effort undertaken by United earlier this year. In May, United announced that it was making room for its Newark schedule by moving three other routes (Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ithaca, New York and Scranton / Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) to its hub in Washington Dulles. These routes now work from Washington.

United has also announced a new service from its west coast hubs.

Effective June 6, United will add non-stop service from San Francisco to Columbus, Ohio. And from Los Angeles, service to Eugene, Oregon; Madison, Wisconsin; and Pasco / Tri-Cities, Washington will begin March 31st.

For the past year, United has been trying to improve the schedules of its hubs to give local customers more flights and destinations and to offer more choice to connecting travelers.

"There is no substitute for an excellent network; serving destinations with convenient flight schedules and desired by our customers. It's something we continue to develop in California, "said Janet Lamkin, United California President, in the carrier's publication. "We are looking forward to connecting more of the country to California, for example Columbus and Madison, two important markets for higher education."

All told, United has announced 22 new routes starting in 2019.
