GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The San Francisco 49ers certainly had their chances, but it was finally Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers who won the close win on Monday Night Football. The Packers won 33-30 on a late second placement from Mason Crosby. Rodgers finished the match with 425 yards and two touchdowns in what was a vintage primetime performance. Here are the best Monday night takeaway at Lambeau Field.
1. One night when the 49ers attack was masterful for most of the match, it was some late-night training that threatened the greatest number. San Francisco had two discs to make ice cream. The first was with a seven-point lead after the defense stopped Green Bay in fourth place in the 49ers line. The second tied at 30 in the last two minutes. A good comeback kick from Richie James, combined with a stupid penalty against the Packers, gave the 49ers an excellent field position with a 47-yard line. The 49ers, however, failed to get a first try and an interception in the third try gave Rodgers a final regulatory blow. It is these missed opportunities that will remain in this game.
2 The San Francisco defense was burned for 17 points in the first quarter, and then settled from there. The 49ers limited Green Bay to two goals for the next two and a half quarter. It was only in the last minutes of the match that Rodgers exploited his magic. Yet Green Bay had three 100-yard receivers: Davante Adams (132), Jimmy Graham (104) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (103).
3 C.J. Beathard completed 16 of 23 passes for 245 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in what was a very impressive start to the season overall. He greatly benefited from the return of Marquise Goodwin. They logged in for two touchdowns in the first half: a 67-yard bomb and another 30-yard score. Goodwin finished with four receptions for a career-high 126 yards and the pair of touchdowns. He said he was as satisfied with the postgame as since the first week. The 49ers will need Goodwin to continue to be a stud for the rest of the season.
4 Turnovers continue to condemn the 49ers. Two fumbles in the first half put the 49ers in an early hole. D.J. Reed kicked a shot after the first touchdown of the Packers game and Kyle Juszczyk escaped after a 21-yard reception. The defense managed to convince Green Bay to score goals after each rotation. However, the 49ers have again lost the battle of 3-0 business numbers and now own a -11 turnover differential for the season, the worst of the NFL.
5 Ronald Blair was a constant force in the race for the pass. He had a bag and several other pressures. DeForest Buckner and Sheldon Day represented the other two San Francisco bags in the night.
6 Richard Sherman was called for an illegal and costly contact penalty on 3 and 15 of the Packers' final drive. Buckner saw his bag canceled because of his flag. It was at best a questionable call. Without this flag, San Francisco would have had one more chance of winning in regulation. At worst, the match would have been extended.
7. With Trent Taylor (at the back) out, I assumed the 49ers would use Richie James a bit in the slot. Instead, Kyle Shanahan chose to use more than two sets of receivers in his heavy game plan.
8 Speaking of running, Matt Breida had 61 yards in 14 races with an injured ankle. "Breida is the man," said Kyle Shanahan after the match ended. Breida was questionable all week and participated in the contest as a decisive decision. Instead of Alfred Morris spelling Breida, it's Raheem Mostert, who has a career record of 87 yards on 12 races. Shanahan was obviously trying to keep pace in the match as the 49ers were relentlessly attacking Green Bay's run-of-the-field defense. The 49ers scored 174 rushing yards with an impressive 5.8-yard average.
9 If there is one room that the 49ers' offensive would like to have at the back, it's a third run from the bottom of CJ Beathard to George Kittle in the fourth quarter. Beathard had Kittle wide open for what would have been a finish to move the chains. Instead, the 49ers had to settle for a placement to score a seven point match. A touchdown in this situation would have given the 49ers a two-point lead.
ten. Jimmie Ward left the game at the end of the fourth quarter due to a sore hamstring injury. Greg Mabin replaced him and was heavily targeted. The trend continued as Aaron Rodgers was completely unaware of Sherman's side for almost the entire match.
11 The third San Francisco defense was impressive for most of the game. Green Bay was 0-on-6 third at one point and 2 of 11 at another. The Packers' first conversion to the third shot came with a time remaining at 6:05 in the third quarter and they ended the match 4 out of 13.
