A police officer from Prince George County has been arrested and faces rape charges in connection with an allegation that he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman during a roadside check Thursday, officials said Monday.
Police said Petty Officer 1st Class Ryan Macklin was taken into custody on Monday night following the incident that allegedly occurred early Thursday on University Boulevard in Langley Park, Maryland. .
According to the police, the woman was forced to engage in "a sexual act" while she and the officer, on duty and in uniform, were sitting in her car in a nearby car park.
Police said on Monday night that she had no information on what prompted the woman to become the target of the alleged attack.
In a brief surveillance video, police said, the officer can be seen turning on emergency equipment on his marked police car in order to stop traffic.
"A few hours after the woman came forward," the officer was suspended, as were her police powers, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan, at a conference of press Monday, before the charges are reported.
Police are investigating a coordination with the county attorney's office, said Donelan.
Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III, who spoke at a press conference Monday night, called the accusation "very disturbing".
Macklin, a six-year-old veteran, was assigned to patrol an area including communities such as Hyattsville, Mount Rainier and College Park.
