José Mourinho was charged with improper conduct following the Manchester United match against Newcastle United on 6 October, the Football Association announced.
United's manager spoke to a camera after his side came back from behind to impose 3-2 on Old Trafford.
"It is alleged that his language at the end of the match, as captured by the footage broadcast, was abusive and / or insulting and / or inappropriate," the statement said. "It has until 18 hours on October 19, 2018 to respond to the charge."
Mourinho could potentially face a contact ban if he is found guilty. The match was held in a tense atmosphere, the club having earlier denied the report that Mourinho would be fired this weekend, regardless of the result.
United has recovered from 2 to 0 to complete a spectacular comeback with a goal from the 90th minute of Alexis Sánchez.
The footage of the game shows Mourinho saying something – at one point while looking into a camera – as he headed for the tunnel after the final whistle. It is understood that the FA has used a lip reader and that Mourinho's remarks have been interpreted as offensive.
