THE BRONX – Families living in the Bronx Claremont Consolidated Houses say that exceptionally large rats are invading their apartments.
"I can not sleep at night. I do not sleep I'm so traumatized, "said Veronica Martinez, a resident who described rodents as" big cats. "
Asia Clemente said her one-year-old son, Daniel, had been bitten by a rat. At one point, his three children were forced to hide in a corner because they were so terrified by the rats. Clemente says she's asked for a transfer to an apartment where she does not have to deal with crazy rodents.
She is still waiting.
"I would like to say to the mayor:" Do better, "said Clemente." I pay my rent. We deserve to live as human beings. "
Families say that the problem of rats is aggravated after the alleged closure of the waste compactor.
City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson, a Democrat representing the Bronx City Council's 16th District, is angry, saying videos of giant rats rushing to the countertops and sinks make her crawl.
"I think the mayor, the acting president and the executive director should all come to the Bronx," she said.
A spokesman for the New York City Housing Authority said residents should not live in such conditions.
"Since this information was brought to our attention, we have taken drastic action to combat the current infestation by eliminating rodent access to the building and apartments, which will also keep out future rodents. We apologize to our residents and will continue to monitor this situation vigilantly. "
