SAND LAKE, Mich. – The six-year-old boy selling pumpkins to pay for a diabetic alert dog raised more than $ 20,000 in four days after his story became viral.
Ian Unger, a kindergarten child from Sand Lake with type 1 diabetes, started his roadside pumpkin stand at the end of September. The family raises funds for a dog to monitor Ian's blood sugar levels during bus trips to and from the school.
"A diabetic help dog alerts the person to his or her blood sugar level about 45 minutes before your blood sugar level appears on the meter," said Ian's mother, Katrina Christensen. "We want him to be a normal kid. With the dog, he will have a better chance of doing it. "
Christensen said that a diabetic alert dog could cost $ 25,000.
Ian's pumpkins circulated in western Michigan over the weekend on Facebook. Customers came to his home en masse, buying more than 150 pumpkins Friday and Saturday.
Since the story was published for the first time, Ian and his pumpkins have become viral. More than 650 people donated to the Facebook fundraiser, raising more than $ 23,000.
"I was in tears all day with the arrival of all these people and the love that they are showing him is amazing," Christensen said Saturday. "Whatever it is, everyone has something that is wrong or that goes wrong. That's just what you make of it. And he has that in his heart. "
