If health trends continue, the average Singaporean can expect to live longer in 2040, according to a new study published by a global health research organization released Wednesday (Oct. 17).

The University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation study shows that Singaporeans can live on average 85.4 years in 2040, an increase of 2.1 years over the average of 83.3 years in 2016.

Singapore ranks third among average life expectancies in 2040 among the 195 countries and territories, with Spain in first place (85.8 years) and Japan in second place (85.7%). The other top 10 countries should be Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Israel, France, Luxembourg and Australia.

The study, published in the Lancet Journal, also predicts that the top 10 causes of premature death in Singapore in 2040 will be largely similar to the current leading causes. They will include lower respiratory tract infections, ischemic heart disease – a disease characterized by a decrease in the blood supply to the heart – Alzheimer's disease, lung cancer and chronic kidney disease.

However, it is said that there will be a significant increase in the number of deaths due to noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic renal failure and breast cancer. lung.

In addition, instead of suicide and breast cancer, currently among the leading causes, hypertensive heart disease and COPD will be among the top 10 causes in 2040.

The Institute's director of data science and lead author, Kyle Foreman, said, "The future of global health is not predetermined and there is a wide range of plausible trajectories. But if we see significant progress or stagnation depends on whether or not health systems are able to take into account the key factors of health. "

He added that high blood pressure, high body mass index, hyperglycemia, smoking and alcohol consumption are the main factors that explain the essential of the future trajectory of premature death.

Fifty-nine countries, including China, are expected to exceed life expectancy by 80 years by 2040. Syria, Nigeria and Indonesia are expected to significantly improve their life expectancy in 2040.

At the same time, the Central African Republic, Lesotho, Somalia and Zimbabwe projected a life expectancy of less than 65 in 2040, indicating persistent global disparities in survival if current trends continue.

Palestine is expected to experience the largest decline in rankings, alongside the United States, which is expected to rise from 43rd in 2016 to 64th in 2040, with an average life of 79.8 years – the largest decline in high-income countries.
