Warning: the leading spoilers coming for the second episode of The flash Season 5, called "Blocked".
The flash is going in a new direction with his last supervillain, and the fans had to wait for the second episode of Season 5 to see who he is and what he can do. The Cicada was teased as a character of all time who lost his family because of metahumans, and he was driven in order to exterminate all metas with his own meta abilities. Now that "Blocked" has shown what Cicada can do, it's already clear that Cicada is the overseer The flash Needs.
First and foremost, Cicada is not a speedster. Admittedly, we already knew before season 5 that Cicada was not going to be a speedster, and technically we spent a full season with a non-speedster like a big bad guy, but The flash has come to rely a little too much on the speedsters to drive the plot. While the show is calling well The flash and focuses on the Speedster Scarlet, the show also had to mix things up and get away from super-speed in its fifth season.
By introducing a villain who is not a speedster and who will probably not have the incredible Thinker technology that allowed him to do just about anything, The flash can explore new lands. We have never seen a villain like Cicada and we have never seen Barry and Co. try to fight a villain like Cicada before. The flash need something new for season 5, and offer cicada. Score for a supervillain who is not a speedster or anything that has been done before!
Of course, the cicada has powers, and The flash only begins to reveal what he is capable of. What "Blocked" has proven, however, is that Cicada is able to use his lightning-shaped dagger to undermine other meta's powers. This ability allowed him to brutally murder Gridlock, stab Meta Vanessa's Week in the back and almost kill Barry, Cisco and Vibe until Nora arrived with a last-minute stop.
This leads to a second reason why Cicada is the bad guy The flash Needs in Season 5. As a captain able to remove the other powers meta-even temporarily, Barry and his friends having all regained their powers at the end of the episode – Cicada could force Team Flash to think outside the box superpowerful.
The flash explored what it looks like when a hero without superpowers battles a super powerful villain Arrowcrossover -verse. This first crossover event saw Barry become temporarily perverse and Oliver had to use all his training and his tricks as Arrow to control the outboard without killing him or getting himself killed. Oliver succeeded, but Barry never had the same kind of powers without powers.
The Cicada, as a new big villain, could force Barry to evolve into superheroes and develop the ability to defend himself and defeat a formidable enemy without using any of his speeding powers. His attempt to punch Cicada was as good as one would expect from a guy who does not usually rely on anything but super powers. He will not surely become an Oliver Queen, but he could adapt.
Let's hope that the Flash team will need to fight differently to defeat Cicada. It's an exciting prospect for all fans who watch from the beginning. The unique abilities of the cicada could also give Iris more to do. In addition to his temporary pass as a speedster with his purple lightning, Iris had to rely on his mind to defend against the worst of the worst Central City.
The cicada could open the door to a wider bow for Iris. After all, the Flash team might not have put all the details on Cicada in "Blocked" if Iris had not done his homework on Gridlock's murder as a reporter. As a person who did not have super powers during most of the series, she could be a particularly useful asset in season 5. Maybe Cicada's powers can give Nora a reason to bond !
The third big reason why Cicada is the bad guy The flash The needs of season 5 are that we already know a lot about him, and Nora's cliffhanger teasing that she has some information of the future on Cicada means that we should learn more about him in the next episode. The flash already does not risk to frustrate his fans, as did the series with some returns in Season 3, when the revelation of Savitar was dragged almost a whole season.
We saw a masked cicada, wielding a dagger, emitting a scary sound like an insect and trying to murder metas. We also saw him unmasked at his job as a janitor, but only for a few moments. Nora clearly has information about the future of the Cicada. We will have to wait to see if her information comes from her studies on The Flash or if she has any experience whatsoever with Cicada. Whatever the case may be, her perspective as a future girl means that the Cicada survey will have to take place differently than in previous seasons.
The fact that Nora has already noted changes in the chronology because of her presence in the past also means that the information she shares is not necessarily fixed in stone. The sense of suspense and mystery will not be totally absent. Despite my many problems with The flashBarry's decision to let Nora drag in time – or mismanagement – time travel into the hands of fearless speedsters could make the season a little more uncertain in a fun way.
Basically, the Cicada is a factor that neither we nor the Flash team has had to face over the years. The flash, and this can only be a good thing for a show that kicks off its fifth season on the air. Let's hope the series continues to treat it both intriguingly and scary.
