A North Carolina Army soldier was killed Wednesday morning south of the city of Whiteville, in Columbus County, according to 1st Sgt. Michael Baker with the State Highway Patrol.
The road patrol identified the soldier as 11-year-old veteran Kevin K. Conner in a statement Wednesday morning.
"The road patrol family mourns the loss of a hero and will forever be upset by the tragic events that have occurred," said Col. Glenn McNeill Jr., commander of the Highway Patrol on l & # 39; highway. "We ask everyone to keep Conner's family and all those who knew him in your thoughts and prayers."
Southeastern Community College, near Whiteville, said on Facebook that Conner was the husband of a member of his staff, music instructor Miranda Conner. "The CSC community, Columbus County and the state of North Carolina are crying with her," said Tony Clarke, CCS President.
The shooting took place around 12:15 pm, during a roadside check on the US 701 near Sellers Town Road, Baker said in a press release. The soldier was transported to the hospital but did not survive, said Baker.
Highway patrol officials said the suspect had "fired several shots while hitting the soldier" from his white GMC van before fleeing. His vehicle then "lost capacity trying to cross a crossing" at Flair Bluff, officials said.
"The authorities were able to locate the suspect and detain him after a thorough search of the area," Baker said in the statement. The suspect was arrested around 4 am, the WWAY television channel reported.
The officials had not disclosed the identity of the suspect on Wednesday, March 21.

This is the second time that a police officer is killed in the performance of his duties this year.
On May 21, Private Samuel Newton Bullard died when his patrol vehicle struck a bridge support and caught fire on Interstate 77 in Yadkin County, reported the Charlotte Observer newspaper. Soldiers were pursuing a BMW passing through a checkpoint, officials said.
Bullard had been working in the department for three years and was posted to Surry County, according to information provided by the BC Ministry of Public Safety.
Dakota Kape Whitt, 22, of Elkin, was captured and charged with murder, according to the State Investigation Bureau.
In nearby Sampson County, officials said that a police officer on leave had been wounded in the face Monday night.
The officer was identified as Justin Ryan Matthews, 31, from the Fayetteville Police Department, according to the WNCN.
Matthews would be in a stable state Tuesday afternoon, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.
