BARRON, WIS. – The Wisconsin teenage girl being searched nationwide was at the family's home when her parents were shot dead, authorities said Wednesday.
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Denise Closs, 46, and James Closs, 56, were homicide victims. Their bodies were found in the house near the town of Barron Monday morning.
Fitzgerald said the results of the autopsies performed on Denise and James Closs indicated that both people had died from gunshot wounds. He added that no firearms were found on the scene.
Dozens of investigators have dissected more than 400 tips, but still have to locate 13-year-old Jayme Closs, fearing that law enforcement officials at the local, regional and federal levels will fear injuries after the attack. disappearance of his father and his parents.
Fitzgerald said during a 16-hour press conference that it's "100%" his goal to bring Jayme home.
"We have not received any evidence of a credible sighting," he said. The sheriff added that there were also no viable suspects at the moment.
Fitzgerald has not yet specified how long the parents had died before the discovery of the bodies after a 911 call brought deputies to the house, located in a woods by the side of the road. 8 just west of the city. Family members told CBS News in a telephone interview that the door to the family's home had been opened.
"The search continues to bring 13-year-old Jayme Closs home," a tweet posted around 9 am on Wednesday by the FBI's Milwaukee office, which includes the sheriff's office phone number and #FindJayme.
Fitzgerald and the sheriff's office-trained staff of "Victim Support Representatives" have scheduled a citizens' forum at 7 pm. Wednesday at Wisconsin Indian Head Tech College in Rice Lake.
Jayme's 70-year-old grandfather, Robert Naiberg, said that nothing seemed to have happened at the family reunion that Jayme and his mother were attending on Sunday afternoon. He said that Jayme's father was at work at that time. James and Denise Closs were both long-time employees of Jennie-O Turkey in Barron, which has a hatchery and processing plant.
Naiberg, Denise Closs's father, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Jayme "was calm, as always" at her grandson's birthday party. Naiberg said Denise Closs was "a thoughtful person [who brought] a small gift for everyone "at the party.
The sheriff said it was his belief that the rally had taken place on the last occasion when Jayme was known, adding that it was not held at the Closs House.
A darker rally took place on Tuesday night, when a community vigil at St. Peter's Catholic Church gathered people to pray for the safe return of Jayme. Ribbons of blue and green were distributed – blue for the teen's favorite color; green for raising awareness about missing children.
As the teenager's search entered her third day on Wednesday, local residents were still trying to understand the breathtaking news of the murder and the girl's disappearance.
"It just does not happen. It's just nightmares, "said Rachel Svendsen, the bakery assistant at the city's bakery. "I think people are keeping their families closer because of that."
They also yearn for answers.
"It's scary …" Svendsen added. "If it can happen once, can it happen again? There are so many unknowns.
The FBI, state investigators and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are helping Barron County in search of the girl Fitzgerald has described as "a shy and shy 13-year-old girl who loves the dance and sport ".
The national center announced Monday afternoon that an Amber alert had been launched in order to make known the disappearance of Jayme. The center's opinion indicated that the girl had been taken from her home early Monday morning, "probably with a gun".
Among the tips, let's quote one from Miami, where police tweeted an SUV spotted at a gas station with Wisconsin license plates and a passenger who could have been Jayme.
Several hours later, the Wisconsin sheriff said, "I can not say it was not her … we have no credible information about the Miami incident."
Jayme is described as a white person, 5 feet tall and weighing 100 pounds, with green eyes and blond or strawberry blonde hair.
Anyone with information that may lead to their discovery is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 715-537-3106 or 911.
