While he shared some clichés with Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa was a relatively unknown presence on the sideline of Alabama until he engaged in the second. half of the 2018 championship game and lead the Crimson Tide to an overtime victory.
This year, after winning the starting position for Hurts – who recorded a record of 26-2 while he was at the center – Tagovailoa exploded, establishing one of the best quarterback seasons in the world. History of Alabama.
It is impossible to classify Tagovailoa (and Hurts of elsewhere) among the great Tuscaloosa while he is still preparing for the Crimson Tide, but we have drawn up a list on which he could very well end up in the future – the five best quarterbacks of Alabama of all time.

Any list that tries to be as definitive as this name suggests has a task almost impossible to accomplish. How do you define the best quarterback?
For this version, we chose to combine two things: individual success as a quarterback and team success under the direction of each player.
In addition, we did not take into account the success of the NFL in our ranking (sorry for fans of Bart Starr).
5. Greg McElroy

Career | 436 | 658 | 66.3 | 5691 | 8.6 | 9.2 | 39 | ten | 155.4 |
McElroy did not play much in his first two seasons, sitting behind quarterback John Parker Wilson both years. But in 2009, along with Heisman winner Mark Ingram, McElroy took over. Highlights of the year were Iron Bowl, when McElroy led a 79-yard, 15-game run to take the first lead of the game with more minutes. "This may be one of the biggest motivations I have ever been associated with," said Alabama coach Nick Saban at the time.
Then there was the 2009 SEC Championship, where McElroy beat Heisman's winner Tim Tebow to lead the Tide to a 32-13 victory. This season would end with a national championship – Nick Saban's first with Alabama.
The following year, McElroy set a school record in one season (2,987 yards) that would be beaten by the best player on our list.
4. Pat Trammell

Career | 117 | 225 | 52 | 1631 | 7.2 | 7.2 | 9 | 4 | 122.5 |
Bear Bryant's first quarterback set the bar high in Tuscaloosa. In 1961, Trammell led Alabama to a perfect season and his first championship in 20 years, scoring 1035 yards and eight touchdowns. Trammell also racked up 1,119 yards and 15 touchdowns throughout his career while setting a record of 26-2-4.
All these statistics were obtained by sharing meaningful snapshots with Robert Skelton at the Statistics Center in his first two years. In his first year as a senior player, Trammell won the SEC's Most Valuable Player title and was named the NCAA's All-American Academic.
3. Jay Barker

Career | 402 | 706 | 56.9 | 5689 | 8.1 | 7.3 | 26 | 24 | 130 |
Barker is the only quarter on this list to never play for Bear Bryant or Nick Saban. Under the direction of Gene Stallings, in 1992, Barker led Alabama to a perfect season, crowned by the National Title 1: Miami, 34-13.
Two years later, as the eldest, Barker racked up 1,996 yards and 14 touchdowns, en route to finish fifth of the vote on Heisman.
2. Joe Namath
years | CMP | ATT | PCT | YDS | Y / A | AY / A | TD | INT | RATE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1962 | 76 | 146 | 52.1 | 1192 | 8.2 | 7.5 | 13 | 8 | 139.1 |
1963 | 63 | 128 | 49.2 | 765 | 6 | 4.6 | 7 | 7 | 106.5 |
1964 | 64 | 100 | 64 | 756 | 7.6 | 6.1 | 4 | 5 | 130.7 |
Career | 203 | 374 | 54.3 | 2713 | 7.3 | 6.1 | 24 | 20 | 125.7 |
Before it was Broadway Joe, Namath totaled 39 touchdowns – including 15 on the ground – for Alabama, and gave Bear Bryant his second national title while recording a 29-4 record for the Crimson Tide .
Namath's numbers do not look as impressive as those of today, but they are very competitive at the time. For reference, the Heisman winner in 1964, John Huarte (of Notre Dame), launched 2,062 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during the year.
1. AJ McCarron
years | CMP | ATT | PCT | YDS | Y / A | AY / A | TD | INT | RATE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2010 | 30 | 48 | 62.5 | 389 | 8.1 | 9.4 | 3 | 0 | 151.2 |
2011 | 219 | 328 | 66.8 | 2634 | 8 | 8.3 | 16 | 5 | 147.3 |
2012 | 211 | 314 | 67.2 | 2933 | 9.3 | 10.8 | 30 | 3 | 175.3 |
2013 | 226 | 336 | 67.3 | 3063 | 9.1 | 9.8 | 28 | 7 | 167.2 |
Career | 686 | 1026 | 66.9 | 9019 | 8.8 | 9.6 | 77 | 15 | 162.5 |
No other quarterback on this list was the starting point for two national championship teams. But McCarron did not just win championships, he excelled. In the title game of 2011, he was named Offensive Player of the Match. In the 2012 championship, he spent 264 yards and four touchdowns.
If that was not enough, McCarron broke the pass record during his stay at Tuscaloosa: 77 touchdowns for just 15 interceptions, 9,019 rushing yards, a completion percentage of 66.9 and an overall score of 162.5. All this with a record of 36-4.
Playing with Trent Richardson and Amari Cooper did not hurt. McCarron's best season came when Cooper was a freshman in 2012. That year, McCarron had 2,933 yards, 30 touchdowns (an Alabama record) and only three interceptions. But it was the following season (when he set the Alabama record with 3063 yards) that allowed McCarron to take first place in Heisman, where he finished second to Jameis Winston. No quarterback from Alabama has ever won the Heisman, but McCarron has approached more than anyone else.
