Salmonella epidemic linked to raw chicken makes sick 92 in 29 states

A drug-resistant outbreak of salmonella linked to raw chicken products has made 92 people sick in 29 states, resulting in 21 hospitalizations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which are investigating the epidemic, victims reported consuming different types and brands of chicken products purchased at various locations.

The agency has not found any common provider among the cases, indicating that the outbreak could be prevalent throughout the chicken industry. Consumers are advised to handle the raw chicken carefully and cook thoroughly, but they have not asked retailers to stop selling raw chicken products.

During the last outbreak, no deaths were reported, but affected patients may experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. It usually lasts four to seven days and allows patients to recover without medical intervention. However, in severe cases, patients may require hospitalization because of diarrhea or an infection spreading from the intestines to the bloodstream.

Patients most at risk for serious illness are generally under the age of 5 or over 65, or those with weakened immune systems. The diseases, which were reported between January and September 2018, affected patients aged less than one year to 105 years, with 69% of cases occurring in women.
