COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The Columbus Blue Jackets were four days behind in cooking after being beaten by Tampa Bay on the road last weekend. In the first period against Philadelphia Thursday night, they did not really look better.
But the Blue Jackets managed to get rid of the discomfort and to score three goals in the second period to beat the Flyers and win a 6-3 win Thursday night.
Cam Atkinson scored two goals in a row in the second for Columbus, both established with Artemi Panarin's fine crossovers on the ice.
"We talked about it between times," said Atkinson. "Our first period was just not good enough and competitive enough. I think we sort of answered the bell in the second and third. "
Sergei Bobrovsky, who had absorbed much criticism after the Lightning's 8-2 defeat on Saturday, made 32 saves against Philadelphia (3-4).
Anthony Duclair, Nick Foligno, Josh Anderson and Sonny Milano also scored for the Blue Jackets (3-3).
Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist, and Oskar Lindblom and Sean Courturier scored for the Flyers. Substitute goalkeeper Calvin Pickard, in front of Brian Elliott, stopped 22 shots.
Konecny had the merit of his first goal of the year when he deflected Robert Hagg's shot in half the first period.
Duclair responded at the end of the period with the most impressive goal of the match. He fell with the puck past the goal of the Flyers, raised him, corrected him again and, still unbalanced, pulled him between Pickard's pads.
"I thought it was rather lucky," said Duclair.
The Flyers took a 2-1 lead with 50 seconds remaining in the first period when Courturier shot Bobrovsky over the shoulder from the top of the right circle.
The Blue Jackets lined up again early in the second when Atkinson, who was struggling to skate past the blue paint, tipped a Panarin pass.
Atkinson buried his second goal of the night three minutes later, winning a head-to-head battle with Hagg.
"Honestly, I thought we were a little lean in the first period, and (Atkinson) gave us a little spark in the second period to take the lead," said Columbus coach John Tortorella.
"At that point, we had a change of momentum," Courturier said, "and we could not get it back."
Foligno raised the score to 4-2 with a shot in front of Pickard's stick at 8:34 of the second.
Lindblom scored a 4-3 save for the Flyers early in the third period, but Anderson scored another goal for Columbus five minutes from the end of the match when he escaped from the Christian Folin falls from Philadelphia net and capitalized. Milano got the sixth goal, while it remained 2:12 from the goal of Oliver Bjorkstrand.
