Derrick Lewis has asked Daniel Cormier to take him seriously when he faces the heavyweight title next month.
Cormier will defend his heavyweight strap for the first time on short notice against Lewis at UFC 230 which will take place Nov. 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Lewis is about to defeat Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 earlier this month. His post-fight interview made him a star overnight. His Instagram account cost him 1.4 million subscribers.
And so, the UFC seems to have hit the nail by putting Lewis in a title fight less than a month after his last fight.
The short layoff helps Lewis be an outsider of +500 at UFC 230, but for many, including Cormier, the native of New Orleans is a stylistically easier fight than someone else. one like the former champion Stipe Miocic.
Cormier essentially said that himself when he recently asked why he had accepted Lewis at the last minute rather than Miocic, saying that the latter had only his neutrality power on which to support .
"I would not have accepted a rematch against Stipe Miocic at the last minute, he's too good in these circumstances," said Cormier. "I'm not saying that Derrick is not good, but Stipe is able to fight me in different ways, he does a lot of different things, and I think in this fight, Derrick has to knock me out to win. "
Lewis more or less reacted to these comments in a recent media release on Thursday, saying Cormier may regret attending the event thinking it was an easy fight.
"I think he thinks it will be an easy fight for himself," said Lewis, quoted in MMA Mania. "Go ahead and think about it. It's crazy, I even managed to go so far without the training I had before each fight. I'm serious, I do not stay at the gym every day like my opponents. I probably spend 30 minutes (training), five minutes sitting and five minutes on the phone posting messages and everything in between. "
"As long as I'm 100%, I'm in shape. I do not care what he's going to do or what he thinks he can do. I'm just going to worry about what I can do. … If you do not take me seriously, it's a mistake. I want him to take me seriously, I do not want any excuses or anything like that. I can not wait for this fight. "
The Houston resident thinks his popularity and status allows him to win "about a million" victory over Volkov. He then claimed that he would win more in his fight against Cormier than his previous three combined this year.
According to MMA Fighting, these three fights brought $ 880,000 in winnings to Lewis. His first pay TV game at Madison Square Garden could see him breaking the seven-figure mark, which makes him even harder to train.
"Not just the title on the line, every time I saw my contract and the zeros, I thought," OK, I can start coaching now, "Lewis explained. I have already said, I do not stay at the gym like everyone else, my opponents. It is pretty obvious. After the fight, I lay down on the ground, I'm tired.A willing to go sit down my- – somewhere. "
"But this fight here, I really trained all day. Drink more water than necessary. Take really more seriously. I will have no excuse for me to win, lose or draw. "
