Richardson, who had a bad right shoulder all season, aggravated a knee injury against Carolina on Sunday. Crowder will miss his second consecutive game because of a sprained ankle that could keep him out longer. On Thursday, Crowder was seen outside the locker room with a shoe on the right foot and a scooter to move around the premises.
"For a slot machine receiver to change direction with confidence, we have to wait and see," said Redskins coach Jay Gruden. "I would expect it to be back sooner rather than later, but it might take a little while."
Running back Chris Thompson, who missed last week with rib and knee problems, also expressed concern. It is listed as questionable and will likely be a game decision. Running back Adrian Peterson is also questionable, with knee and shoulder injuries, but is more likely to play.
Richardson visited a doctor on Thursday and Gruden said his knee was not abnormal to the point of structural injury. He had been injured for the first time in the fifth week.
Richardson was Washington's most productive catcher with 16 catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns. In three games, Crowder had 13 receptions for 134 yards and one touchdown. The Washington underdogs have combined to reach 75 targets – the least of the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
The Redskins will replace Crowder in the slot by Maurice Harris. The Redskins can replace Richardson by veteran Michael Floyd, who has not yet managed to get a pass. Floyd played 16 shots in two games. Veteran Brian Quick would also become a more important part of the game plan. This scenario gives Washington a more physical body of recipients.
Washington can also use more of its two restricted series. In the three wins of the Redskins, they averaged 28.3 catches per game with at least two tight ends. The ability of Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis to line up in the slot or out of the box offers versatility to the Washington offensive. If Thompson can not play, Kapri Bibbs will be Washington's third player. Last week, Bibbs ran twice for 11 yards and one shot for 6 yards.
