ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) – Marshawn Lynch offensive midfielder of the Oakland Raiders will miss at least a month because of an injury to his groin.
A person familiar with the injury said Friday that an MRI this week had helped determine the severity of the injury. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not make any announcement. The NFL network first reported the diagnosis.
Lynch was injured last week in Oakland's 27-3 loss to Seattle in London. The Raiders (1-5) are on leave this week and will play again on October 28 at home against Indianapolis. Oakland could choose to place Lynch on the injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least eight weeks.
Lynch, 32, has been one of the few positives for the Raiders this season. He is 12th in the league with 376 rushing yards, averaging 4.2 yards per run with three touchdowns. Lynch is fourth in the NFL since the 12th week of last season.
Lynch's best game was Oakland's only win when he ran for 130 yards last month against Cleveland when he showed the power that earned him the nickname of Beast Mode. Lynch came out of retirement last season to join the Raiders before moving to Las Vegas in 2020. He is in the final year of his contract.
Lynch put out, the struggling Raiders will likely turn to Doug Martin and Jalen Richard to shoulder the brunt of the burden. Martin has been signed to be Lynch's main replacement this season, but has been unproductive so far. He has 27 runs for 99 yards and four catches for 5 yards this season. He has averaged only 3.0 yards per race since the start of the 2016 season.
Richard is no longer a receiver, ranking second in the team with 31 catches for 253 yards. Richard has carried the ball 11 times for 32 yards this year and has never had more than nine races in a match in three seasons in the NFL.
DeAndre Washington is the only other half on the list. He was injured in the knee during the training camp. He has not been active yet despite his health in recent weeks. Washington has accumulated 620 yards in 144 races in two seasons in the NFL. His most productive game was started in 2016 while he was running for 99 yards and a touchdown in 12 races against the Colts on Christmas Eve.
