For most managers, the idea that another team brings someone on the field to steer a camera in their canoe would be, well, uncomfortable.
But Alex Cora is not like most managers.
The Houston Astros were caught attacking an unauthorized individual on the field to register the Boston Red Sox canoe during the American League championship series. Many thought the Astros were spying and / or stealing signs, but it turned out they just made sure the Red Sox were not the ones who were doing something fishy. Major League Baseball chose not to punish Houston for this incident, which also occurred during the American League's division series against the Cleveland Indians.
It's unclear if Cora thinks the MLB should tackle Astros more. The Red Sox coach, however, believes his team has benefited from this event.
"I took the opposite because they openly declared that they were playing in defense," Cora said Friday as part of WEEI's "Ordway, Merloni $ Fauria" program. "They said that they were checking if we were flying signs or doing something wrong with the dugout. … I took it in the other direction. I was like: "Paranoia works for us" as they panicked. Throughout the series, we did a lot of things, like dummy posters and all that, to maintain paranoia.
"It's part of the game: knocking down, stealing placards, relaying terrain and paying attention to detail. That's how I took it. If they feel so about us, we might as well push the boundaries and continue to do a lot of things that will make them feel uncomfortable and you have seen it. They continued to change their signs and the pace of the games was awful, but it played in our favor, I think. "
Cora could have a point. The Astros did not look like their usual and confident personality during the ALCS, and one may wonder if obsessive paranoia has played a role in Boston's elimination in five games by Houston.

The first match of the fall classic will take place on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
