Police in Coral Springs, Florida, defend the actions of a police officer who was filmed hitting a 14 year old girl while she was stuck to the ground during an arrest. The Coral Springs Police Department issued a statement claiming that the cell phone video did not tell the whole story.
"The officer's actions were 100% policy-compliant, legal and not excessive," Brad McKeone, head of the department told reporters, reports CBS Miami.
The ministry said officers were called to the Coral Springs Mall Thursday because teenagers were harassing customers. One mother claimed that one of the teens had thrown her child to the ground on the floor.
Police banned the mall group at the request of its security team, but the police said they would eventually be back. After one person was arrested, police said that the girl in the video had tried to "incite" other teens.
"The police tried to take her into custody, when she started fighting and resisting arrest, and because of her stature and aggressive behavior, she was taken to the ground for try to get her fist free, "said the department in a statement.
The teenage mother, Jessica Dennis, said that the officer had gone "completely to the sea".
"His hands are stuck, he's losing his whole body with his shorts – it was too much and she was clearly not aggressive," said Dennis at a press conference, reported CBS Miami.
Meeghan Moldof, the family's lawyer, spoke only moments captured on video and said that she would not comment on the criminal aspect of the case. "But to say that the policeman was right to hit her continuously while he had his knee on his back and his hands under his belly, the video speaks for itself."
Police said she was not investigating the officer's actions, but that could change if the mother decided to make a formal complaint, reports CBS Miami.
