The leaders of college football have tried brilliantly to remove the tedious work.
They shortened the half-time, the commercial breaks and (thankfully) the broadcast of Lou Holtz.
They need a rule of mercy.
Alabama still won 58-21 victories over Tennessee on Saturday, in a match in which he could have played non-stop after half-time and still winning at double digits. Further east, a lot of breath was lost in an attempt to spark Clemson's (No. 3) interest in the country's No. 16 team.
Instead, the state of North Carolina played as the last CCA team losing 41-7 to Death Valley.
For now, place No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Clemson in the playoffs. Yes, Tigers-Tide IV is looming on the horizon like a thunderstorm.
Listen, I could blow smoke on you and try to create a false sense of drama. There is not much left for either of these teams.
The Tigers now play exactly zero ranked teams for the rest of the season. Alabama has a week off before traveling to LSU on November 3rd. The potential ride in the state of Ohio? They still have to face Michigan and a possible Big Ten title against another ranked team.
I start to wonder if it is important that the tide wins. Are you abandoning the top four if they lost a close game in Death Valley?
The only concern Saturday may have been summed up by CBS analyst Gary Danielson. He wondered aloud why Tua Tagovailoa had even started the second half with the Tide up 42-14.
The best reason for Danielson could be: "Let's try to get ready for the adjustments of the second half."
That's what Alabama has to do: manage Tua's exhibition at … football. He enters the LSU game without making a decision in the fourth quarter. It's the equivalent of missing two games.
Regardless of the last winner of the Heisman Trophy to have missed a game less, it was Charlie Ward of Florida State 25 years ago. Tagovailoa missed two because his matches were already decided.
The biggest game of the season is announcing. But Tagovailoa never played in the fourth quarter.
Will it matter? We will see. Tua started the game in Tennessee after recovering from a sprained knee. He had to wait for a shot so he could score a 41-yard-30 pass to get him out of the game.
Tagovailoa was razed by a line player at Vols while he was in contact with Henry Ruggs.
Was it worth it?
That may be the biggest question left after a 37-point win: does Nick play his best player? as well a lot?
I do not go there except to remind that we are watching the largest dynasty in the history of sport. Better than Miami, better than Oklahoma in the 1950s. Better, because Saban shows no signs of slowing down. His 67th birthday comes in 10 days.
Meanwhile, the man who led the defense of the Alabama National Championship last year (Jeremy Pruitt) was at the helm of the Tennessee team that reaped the most of points in 118 years of history of the series.
And the rout did not seem intentional. Kyle Phillips, of Tennessee, toppled a group of Alabama tacklers who fired an interception for a touchdown. The Flights may have found their best quarterback (Keller Chryst, who pitched for 164 yards and two touchdowns).
Tennessee is embarrassed, but who has not played in Alabama this season? The tide could have scored 70.
Can we just move quickly towards Clemson-Bama … again? Both programs brought together the best talent from the South and probably from the country.
They won their games with a total of 406 points. It is excellence. For some of us, it is also a tedious job.
