AMRITSAR: Captain Amarinder Singh, chief minister of Punjab, ordered the opening of a criminal investigation into the train crash in Amritsar, which killed 59 people on Friday night. At the same time, the CM clarified that action would be taken against those responsible for the tragedy when the investigation report would be released. Amarinder added that 59 people had been killed and 57 others injured, while nine others had not yet been identified.

Mourning will continue in the district of Amritsar until Monday and the national flag will be lowered to half mast and all educational institutions will remain closed during this period, he said. "The investigation will cover all aspects of the tragedy, including any railroad failures," added the CM.

Amarinder visited hospitals where wounded were admitted and the place of the accident. He added that a three-member crisis management group and led by the Minister of Health, Brahm Mohindra, would camp in Amritsar as long as it would be necessary to monitor and assist relief operations.

The other two members of the group include Finance Minister Sukbinder Singh Sarkaria and Minister of Forests Sadhu Singh Dharamsot.

"Senior police officials have also been asked to stay in Amritsar until they are required to ensure that the situation stabilizes," said the CM.

When asked why it had taken him so long to reach Amritsar, he said that he was going to Tel Aviv and that he was at the airport at the time when he learned the news of the accident. "I wanted to go to Amritsar on Friday night, but the district authorities advised against it because they did not want the VIP personalities to distract from the urgent relief and relief efforts needed. at this time, "said the CM.

He said that the Punjab government had already announced free care for the wounded in all public and private hospitals in the district, in addition to 5 lakhs to compensate families of those killed in the accident.
