Two people died and 20 were trapped in a coal mine in eastern China Sunday after a rock burst destroyed part of a mining tunnel, reported the company. Xinhua official news agency.

The spontaneous fracturing of the rock – a kind of excavation-induced earthquake – occurred around 11 pm Saturday in Shandong Province. Part of the water drainage tunnel was destroyed in the blast, Xinhua said, and two people were killed by broken stones in the tunnel.

More than 300 people worked in the mine at the time. Most were raised successfully and 20 remained trapped underground.

The incident "has nothing to do with the operations of the workers," the Associated Press told reporters by an official of the security monitoring bureau of the Shandong Coal Mine. The manager, nicknamed Tian, ​​said that about 140 rescuers had been sent.

Ventilation returned about 200 meters from the damaged tunnel, Xinhua said.

The cause of the accident was the subject of an investigation.
