Jordanian King Abdullah said on Sunday that he would not renew two parts of the 1994 peace treaty between Israel and Jordan.

"Baqoura and Ghumar were top priorities," Abdullah tweeted on Sunday.

"Our decision is to terminate the Baquoura and Ghamar annexes to the peace treaty in order to make all the decisions that would serve Jordan and the Jordanians."

According to Haaretz, who reported on the situation on Sunday, Israel has leased the two territories, called Naharayim and Zofar in Hebrew, for a period of 25 years.

The deadline for renewing leases is next Thursday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel would negotiate with Jordan to extend the lease.

"There is no doubt that the agreement is an important asset," he said following the announcement of Abdullah, adding that the peace agreement reached between Israel and Jordan, as well as the agreement with Egypt, were "pillars of regional stability".

According to the newspaper, the Jordanian government was forced not to renew the leases and become fully sovereign in the territory.

Protesters marched last Friday in Amman to ask the government to reclaim the land and cancel the entire peace treaty with Israel.
