Sunday will be sunny enough, but the winds will make temperatures in the 50s feel like in the 30s and 40s.
WASHINGTON – A strong cold front arrived Sunday, causing gusty winds and a return to temperatures near freezing point for some parts of the WTOP listening area.
The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for most of the region from Sunday night to 10 am Monday, indicating that generalized frost could harm sensitive outdoor plants.
"Sunday will have a winter sensation with gusty winds and cool temperatures," said NBC meteorologist Mike Stinneford. "A slow warming trend will start on Monday, with peaks in the 60s on Tuesday."
Even though Sunday should be sunny, temperatures will be hard to exceed the lowest 50 degrees. Taking into account the breeze, it might seem almost glacial in parts of the area Sunday morning – especially north and west of D.C.
At dawn, winds were blowing up to 40 miles at the time in Maryland, Virginia and Washington. The gusts were to ease a bit, but the area still suffers from an afternoon and a windy and cold evening.
Higher altitudes further west may even see persistent snow flurries.

Temperatures should warm up gradually at the start of the work week, with peaks on Monday and Tuesday in the 50 to 50 year old – from low to 60 – an average around this time of year.
If you leave at night this week, regroup: the lowest overnight from Tuesday to Friday will probably be close to zero.
