Raleigh, N.C. – The last day of SparkCon, a downtown arts festival in Raleigh that had previously been postponed once due to hurricane Florence, was canceled on Sunday after strong winds damaged the festival structures during the night.
"Early this morning, the strong winds caused extensive damage in all Raleigh and threw all SPARKcon tents, supplies and equipment down the street," organizers of the event said Sunday. "So now, for your safety and for you, we call a truce with Mother Nature and cancel the fourth day of SPARKcon XIII."
"Nature could hate us," joked the organizers in a press release referring to Hurricane Florence, which forced the festival to postpone its original date in September.
WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell said the winds were blowing as fast as 40 mph.
According to Duke Energy, about 147 customers were without electricity in Wake County and hundreds more in Harnett and Halifax counties.
The stream was delivered to customers on Sunday morning as teams began cleaning up Fayetteville Street, where the festival was scheduled to end on the fourth day.
"We are really proud of SPARKcon 2018," said Brandon Cordrey, director of Visual Art Exchange, which hosts the festival.

Winds up to 35 km / h were felt throughout the day on Sunday, but WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said the winds would drop by the afternoon, leaving behind them a cold night. "We'll get colder tonight as wind gusts go down," said Moss. "When the winds are light, the humidity is low and we will probably have frost."
A freeze notice takes effect in most of the viewing area from midnight and will expire at 9:00 am on Monday.
