TAIPEI, Taiwan – Eighteen people were killed and at least 160 injured on Sunday, when one of Taiwan's newest and fastest trains derailed in a bend along a popular road of the day. weekend, officials said.

Photos taken at the scene just south of Luodong City showed the eight cars of the train in a zigzag formation near the tracks. Five of the cars are flipped to the sides.

Most of the dead were in the first car, which rocked, said a government spokesman.

It was unclear how many people could still be stuck on the train, said the spokesman, who requested anonymity. Some 120 soldiers joined firefighters in their rescue work.
