By the time the world is polio-free, Rotary's contributions to the global polio eradication effort will surpass $ 2.2 billion, including $ 985 million in counterpart funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation . Rotary's contribution to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative since 1988 represents almost 14% of all contributions until June 2017 and approximately 42% of private sector contributions. Rotary is the leading non-governmental volunteer organization contributing to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Five reasons to end polio
• Polio mainly affects children under 5 years old.
• There is no cure, but you can prevent polio with a vaccine.
• Only three countries remain endemic.
• We have reduced the number of cases by 99.9% since 1988.
• Until we end polio forever, every child is in danger.
Unless we eradicate polio, we could see up to 200,000 new cases every year in the world. The disease is endemic in only three countries – Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan – but unless all children are vaccinated, no child is safe.
