The Panthers and Eagles game could be described as "chippy", but that would be a total euphemism compared to what happened in this match between two defensive heavyweights of the NFC. And there could be protest issues at the center of the battles in play between the teams, with Eric Reid and Malcolm Jenkins in the center of the stage.
Reid and Jenkins have both been faces public demonstration by former 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick. After leaving San Francisco, Reid remained a free agent all season and several weeks in the regular season before being signed by the panthers. Reid is involved in a NFL collusion case.

"We think a lot of players should have taken over from Colin," Reid said. "I think Malcolm capitalized on the situation, he co-opted Colin's move to get his organization funded, he's coward, he sold us."
For his part, Jenkins responded by saying that he considered Reid a hero and that he "pleaded" for the safety of the Panthers as part of the movement.
It's a little embarrassing because Reid has become a thug, making himself alone on the ground in this particular case.
The hubbub sparked negative feelings between the teams once they apparently entered the field. Or at least, Reid was still angry and wanted to send a message, deciding to hit quarterback Carson Wentz Eagles late.
