A French student was charged with aggravated violence after being filmed and threatened his professor with a fake gun, Agence France Presse reported.

The video, allegedly taken by a classmate, shows the 15-year-old boy standing in front of his teacher in a high school in the southeastern suburbs of Créteil. The teenager brandishes an air gun while he asks the instructor to mark him as present.

"You've marked me missing, mark me as present," he explains in the video while pointing the fake weapon at the teacher's head.

The video, which was posted on social media, provoked the indignation of French politicians. President Emmanuel Macron said the threat of a teacher was "unacceptable" and called on his ministers to take "all necessary steps" to prevent another episode.

When the student appeared at the police station on Friday with his father, he admitted to having pointed his machine gun at his teacher, but reportedly said it meant "like a joke," according to AFP.

The teacher has filed a police report on the incident.

French officials have pledged to hold a high-level meeting next week to combat violence in schools in low-income urban suburbs.

France, although it has been the victim of several terrorist attacks in recent years, has not experienced the same number of shots in schools in the United States.
