Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, James P. O'Neill, has suspended the use of some bodycam-type devices in effect immediately "after the explosion." one of the cameras of the city this weekend.
The NYPD said it was informed "of a possible product defect" on Saturday when an officer said his Vievu Model LE-5 camera had caught fire. The officer removed the device before it exploded and no injuries were reported.
"Last night, an officer retrieved a camera for his deployment during a visit at midnight and noticed that there was smoke coming out of the bottom portal and immediately removed it. "said the NYPD in a statement. "After being safely removed, the device exploded."
Investigators said that "the incident revealed a potential for battery ignition inside the camera," according to the statement.
The NYPD said it would remove the affected devices while it was investigating the problem.
"As a precaution, the police commissioner has ordered the immediate suspension of the use and distribution of LE-5 camera models," the statement said. "All officers assigned to the LE-5 cameras were instructed to remove them immediately and bring them back to their orders."
Officials did not specify how many cameras had been recalled, but the NYPD has nearly 3,000 LE-5 models used, according to ABC New York radio station WABC-TV.
Axon, who manufactures the affected devices, said he was cooperating with the NYPD during his investigation.
"The agent was not injured, but the security of the agent is of paramount importance to Axon," the company said in a statement. "We will do everything necessary to resolve this situation quickly and safely."
