The BBC's most popular auto show has seen a near-continuous evolution since Jeremy Clarkson hit a guy for cold snaps, got fired and took his heads to Amazon. The grand tour. Now Top Gear is coming back for a 27th series and the well-loved YouTube tire repairer Chris Harris is back – with two new fresh faces as well.
The BBC announced today that the three main hosts of the show would now be Harris, comedian and English TV presenter Paddy McGuinness, and former cricket captain Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff.
The new hosts seemed happy, as they would in a BBC press release:
McGuinness commented, "Getting the Top Gear concert is a real honor and I'm delighted that the BBC gives me this opportunity.
"Hosting a show I've watched and loved since I was a little boy is more than exciting."
Flintoff, former cricket captain and winner of the ashes, said, "It's not often that you have the chance to perform your two dream jobs, but I'm lucky enough to do it.
"I've always been passionate about cars and I'm very excited to be part of the Top Gear team."
So, what are their passionate powers of car? Well, the 6-foot-4 Flintoff made headlines this year for a Lamborghini that he could barely adapt to, and McGuiness bought a Ferrari California, also known as the first Ferrari. from Random Rich Guy. McGuiness also hosted a show called Stars in their cars, which is exactly what it looks like. Hopefully both of them know their shit and can roll like Harris.
The last change of range comes after the news of Mayfriends American Matt LeBlanc, star and symbol, would not return for the 2019 season, citing the number of trips that took him away from his friends and family.
But the obvious question is: what about Rory Reid, who has faced over the past two seasons? Top Gear with LeBlanc and Harris? Apparently, he will resign as the main host, but will continue to do the after-show Extra Gear. Again from the BBC:
Rory Reid, who joined the Top Gear team after the departure of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, will no longer have a lead role to present.
He started playing Extra Gear Series Extra Gear in 2016, before co-hosting the main program alongside LeBlanc and Harris in the most recent series.
According to the BBC, he "will remain in the Top Gear family", alongside Sabine Schmitz, and will continue to be the face of Extra Gear.
As a distraught American that I am (cricket is not my thing, it is an incomprehensible excuse for a "sport", we refuse to apologize as our divine right of Americans). I do not know anything about McGuinness or Flintoff. But I am sad enough to see that Reid has been mistreated from the lead role. His infectious and authentic enthusiasm, ranging from journalist gadget and YouTuber to Top Gear The host and the chemistry with the other guys always made him enjoy watching. And as our own Kristen Lee wrote earlier this year, as someone who was not just an old white car guy in an industry that was full of them, Reid was a refreshing and important presence on a show. as prestigious. I'm glad he stays for Extra Gear, at least.
This is just the third big change in composition since 2016, after Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond left the show (well, the last two are gone, Clarkson was fired.) His first iteration after that, with screaming ginger and the alleged #MeToo pioneer Chris Evans at the helm, has been widely criticized. After that, the series reorganized to welcome LeBlanc, Harris and Reid as lead presenters, and that's when she really seemed to find her place.
The filming of the series 27 begins in early 2019. We will see what these guys are made in the first few months after.
