CNN has obtained a sequence of exclusive surveillance of the forces of order, part of the investigation of the Turkish government, showing the man coming out of the consulate by the back door, wearing Khashoggi's clothes, a false beard and glasses.
The same man was seen in Khashoggi's clothes, according to the Turkish case, at the city's famous Blue Mosque, just hours after the journalist was spotted alive living in the consulate on 2 October.
The man in the video, identified by the official as Mustafa al-Madani, would have been part of what the investigators described as a group of detectives, sent to kill the journalist at the Saudi Arabian consulate during the day. 39, a scheduled appointment to get papers for his next wedding.
"We are determined to discover every stone, we are determined to find out all the facts, and we are determined to punish those responsible for this murder," he said during the interview.
In the apparent concealment that followed Khashoggi's death, 57-year-old Madani, who is the same height, age and size as Khashoggi, 59, was used as a decoy for the journalist, according to a Turkish leader.
A senior Turkish official told CNN that the video showed that Madani had been brought to Istanbul to play the role of double.
"You do not need a double body for restitution or interrogation," said the official. "Our assessment has not changed since October 6. It was a premeditated murder and the body was moved from the consulate."
A Saudi source did not confirm or deny that Madani had been sent to act in duplicate, although he pointed out that the killing of Khashoggi was unintentional.
Madani, ten years older than the other members of the 15-person team, left the consulate building through the back door with a so-called accomplice. Madani wore what the video seems to show as Khashoggi's black blazer, a gray shirt open to the collar and trousers.
Four hours earlier, Madani had entered the consulate through the front door, alongside an alleged accomplice. The head of Saudi legal medicine Salah al-Tubaiqi, another key suspect identified with the help of facial recognition analysis and CNN's chronology of events that day, was also present. The video seems to show Madani without a beard, wearing a blue and white plaid shirt and a dark blue pants. When he came out of the consulate disguised as Khashoggi, the video then seems to show him wearing the same pair of white-soled black sneakers in which he arrived before the journalist's death.
"Khashoggi's clothes were probably still hot when Madani put them on," the top Turkish official told CNN.
Hatice Cengiz, the journalist's fiancee, who was waiting outside the main entrance of the consulate and rang the alarm when he was not coming back, was informed by a consulate guardian that he could have come out of the building by the back door, told CNN Turan Kislakci, a friend of Khashoggi.
This surveillance sequence is another piece of evidence in the mysterious case of what happened to Khashoggi after he entered the consulate almost three weeks ago. It is part of the broader investigation conducted by Turkish officials on the events of that day, as well as the continuing interrogations and international questioning of the Saudi version of the journalist's death.
Turkish officials regularly broadcast to reporters detailed information from the investigation, but they have not yet released a key audio recording that, according to some sources, exists since the interior of the consulate. ;Saudi Arabia. Turkey has not publicly admitted the existence of audio.
