NYPD body camera explosion: Vievu's LE-5 body camera explodes; 2,990 devices recalled

NEW YORK – The New York police has suspended the use of nearly 3,000 body cameras worn by patrol officers. According to a statement from the NYPD, a Vievu model LE-5 body camera exploded after the officer wearing it noticed that the device was starting to smoke and removed it quickly.

CBS New York reports that no one was injured when the camera caught fire. The ministry announced the immediate suspension of the use of all LE-5 body cameras.

"The incident revealed a potential risk of burning the battery inside the camera.The cause and extent of the defect are currently being investigated. an investigation, "explained the NYPD.

In total, 2,990 LE-5 body cameras were used in 16 NYPD orders across the city. Officers using the LE-5 have been ordered to bring the devices home and will not have to carry a body camera at this time.

"Nothing is more important than the safety of our officers, and equipping the NYPD with the best equipment is a top priority," the statement added.

A total of 15,500 police cameras were used by the New York Police. Agents carrying the Vievu Model LE-4 camera will continue to use them. The NYPD said the issue of suspending LE-5 cameras did not affect the other model.
