Three major earthquakes occurred within an hour of each other late Sunday night, followed by three smaller earthquakes off Vancouver Island, about 275 miles west of Bellingham.

According to the US Geological Survey, no damage or injuries were reported during the largest earthquakes – all with a magnitude of 6.5 to 6.8 – and there was no immediate threat of tsunami, according to a message posted on the website of the National Tsunami Warning Center.

The Sunday night earthquake swarm took place less than a week after the Great ShakeOut, a nationwide earthquake exercise.

USGS Geophysicist Amy Vaughan told the Associated Press that earthquakes had been slightly felt on land.

An earthquake of 6.1 to 6.9 can cause serious damage in populated areas.

British seismologist Stephen Hicks said on Twitter that unrest has occurred on the Sovanco Trans Fault, which lies near the San Juan de Fuca plate and the Cascadia subduction zone.

Scientists believe this region is expected since an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or higher.

"Looks like we have a tripled earthquake, guys!" Hicks tweeted about West Coast midnight time. A total of six earthquakes have been recorded kilometers away from each other since the first, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake that struck at 10:40 pm. PDT Sunday.

This was followed by an earthquake of 6.8 to 23.16, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 at 23:23, from 16h to 19h36, from 4.3 to 12.13 and from 4.4 to 13:43.

The six earthquakes had a depth of 6 to 11 miles, according to the PNSN website.

Johanna Wagstaffe, seismologist and meteorologist with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, reported that the earthquakes were relatively shallow and showed a horizontal "sliding" motion that mitigated the threat of the tsunami.

"If any of these earthquakes had hit closer to the ground, it would have had devastating consequences," Wagstaffe reported to the CBC.
