Research suggests that patients with heart disease should get up and move every 20 minutes to avoid an early grave.

Canadian experts say that being active about three times an hour for seven minutes helps to burn 770 calories a day.

Scientists think it's the amount of calories that a heart patient needs to burn to reduce his risk of premature death.

Researchers from the University of Alberta analyzed 132 patients with coronary artery disease.

Participants, averaging 63 years old, wore an armband monitoring their activity level for 22 hours a day for five days.

The researchers then calculated how often a patient with heart disease should move to burn 770 calories a day.

"There is plenty of evidence now that sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health," said Dr. Ailar Ramadi, author of the study.

Other experts have warned that the study – presented at the Canadian Congress on Cardiovascular Health (CCC) in Toronto – was too small to draw any definitive conclusions.

"A randomized controlled trial is needed before it becomes a firm recommendation," said Professor Joep Perk of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

"Nevertheless, regular physical activity is the key to a healthy life, whether you are cardiac or not."

"The ESC guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention recommend a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

"Any activity is better than nothing and more activity is better than others."
