LANDOVER, Maryland – With 22 beginner players including offensive and defensive players, as well as another faction regrouping special teams, football is the ultimate team sport.
Now, imagine where the 2018 Washington Redskins are located if the reception desk never makes Adrian Peterson come for this mid-season training. Even Jamie Lee Curtis finds it scary.
Peterson's return to football glory continued with 99 rushing yards in 24 races in Washington's 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.
"I will not say we would not be as good at running, but, yes," said left tackle Trent Williams of his former teammate from the University of Oklahoma.
"Having obviously [Adrian]I will not say that's it, but it's almost everything, "said Williams. His eyes widened as the Pro Bowl lineman pondered the potential drawbacks of the offense without the future Hall of Fame. It's a dark chronology.
The Peterson Redskins' career is now expanding over six regular season games. The Sunday display of power in tight spaces and speed when daylight was not unique. In those six games, Peterson ran at least 96 yards on four occasions, including the last two, despite a painful shoulder.
"I feel good, man, we just got a W point," said the smiling runner, behind the podium, in the media room of his new stadium. "It makes things feel a lot better. I feel better than last week, I'll say it. "
Washington was sufficiently concerned about his attack after the second pre-season game to explore the free agent market. Peterson's arrival at Redskins Park in August has generated the "Whoa" expected of casual NFL fans, who imagine the player hammering idiot defenders daring to attack him. This player did not exist anymore. At least, that's what many have assumed.
Peterson reached one last high in 2000 (1,000 yards or 4.0 yards per run). Injuries and inefficiency dominated his stops in 2017 in New Orleans and Arizona. Back-to-backs capable of carrying an offense are not just hanging out to take like a penny on a sidewalk. Still, there was Peterson, waiting for a team to show its interest. After losing Derrius Guice, knee injury late in the season, and acknowledged that the internal options were not enough, the Redskins called.
"We did not have a lot of expectations," said Jay Gruden after the Redskins improved to 4-2 and took a one and a half lead in the NFC East. "We did not expect him to be part of our football team until we had some injuries. Then we got it. I did not know what to expect. I know he looked great in this workout.
This training led to a signature and almost simultaneously to the starting concert. Now, it's hard to envision anyone in these short and short-term scenarios. Peterson had 23 and 20 yard runs against the Cowboys. The latter helps set up one of two goals for Dustin Hopkins. His overall production helped move the channels into another game where the passing game led by Alex Smith was punchy.
It is this random road that leads to Redskins Park is the reason why Peterson's rebirth is shocking to many, with one notable exception.
"Not at all – I think everyone around is surprised, I'm not," said Peterson. "I'm expecting the greatness of myself. That's why I put the work in it. God blessed me with this talent. Many people see, and many do not see. … just keep trust in me. When presented with my opportunity, I will enjoy every Sunday. "
Peterson takes advantage of this opportunity with the Redskins because necessity is the mother of invention. It turns out that the attack on Washington required a more significant reboot than the rollback required a transformation.
"There are not many guys like [Adrian] to walk down the street, "said Williams," and thankfully, we found a rough diamond. "
