FILE: The rustle of an eraser envelope provoked a violent confrontation during a recent concert.
The rustle of an envelope of chewing gum during an intense performance of Mahler's 5th Symphony in Sweden last week caused a "violent attack" in the audience after the chewing thief -Gum hit the glasses of a young man there on the floor.
The Washington Post reported that the attack had occurred during a symphony in Malmo. Witnesses told a local newspaper that the woman who had crumpled the chewing gum had been sitting quietly after the man had thrown it away. When the crowd cheered Andris Nelsons, the conductor, after finishing Adagietto, chewing gum hit the glasses of the man's face. The newspaper said his companion was found in front of another man.
The confrontation seemed over when the woman's partner spoke with the young man. The audience, however, was fooled because the companion was using proximity to hit the bag thrower in the belly.
A witness called the fight "very unpleasant".
The newspaper reported that Sydsvenskan, the concert hall, had announced what was expected of the audience during these performances and had appeared to be siding with the bag thrower. Eating snacks and drinking beer may be appropriate for a hockey game, but the behavior does not necessarily translate into a concert hall.
