Maxima and Willem-Alexander appeared to be pleased to see the Queen as they met in London today amid a stunning display of pomp and pageantry.

The Dutch royals have travelled to the UK for a two-day state visit.

Maxima and Willem-Alexander were treated to a ceremonial welcome on Horse Guards Parade, with the royal party leaving for Buckingham Palace in a carriage procession.

Her Majesty looked elegant in a purple coat and floral hat for the occasion.

And Maxima stunned in a glamorous pink outfit with a fashionable headband.

Prime Minister Theresa May also attended with foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt and Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

Mrs May is likely to be hoping that she can use the state visit to secure post-Brexit ties with the Netherlands.

Earlier today, Willem-Alexander and Maxima visited the Dutch embassy where they greeted Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, with a kiss.

Charles and Camilla escorted Willem-Alexander and Maxima from the Dutch embassy to Whitehall.

And the Dutch royals will have lunch at Buckingham Palace before laying a wreath at the grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey.

During their busy first day, Willem-Alexander and Maxima will also visit the Houses of Parliament and have afternoon tea at Clarence House.

The Queen will host a state banquet for the Dutch royals tonight, which Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, are expected to attend.

It comes after Kate met Willem-Alexander in Holland in 2016 during her first solo overseas visit.

Willem-Alexander and Maxima married in 2002. The pair have three daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia and Ariane.

Willem-Alexander became monarch in 2013 when his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated after a 33-year reign.

Queen Beatrix is a distant cousin of Elizabeth II and the pair always greet each other warmly with a kiss on the cheek.

Willem-Alexander and Maxima previously visited the UK in 2015 for the Remembrance Day parade in London to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands following the end of the Second World War.

The last state visit from the Netherlands was by Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus in November 1982.
