Professional wrestling star Roman Reigns said goodbye to the ring Monday night, revealing that his leukemia had returned after being treated 11 years ago.
Reigns, 33, of his real name Leati Joseph Anoa'i, announced to fans of Providence, Rhode Island, during an episode of "WWE Raw" that he was giving up his belt of champions and that He took a break while he was being treated.
"In reality, I call Joe and I live for 11 years with leukemia and unfortunately it's back," he said while holding back tears. "Since leukemia is back, I can not fulfill my role, I can not be this fight champion and I will have to give up the world championship.
"I'm not going to lie, I take all the prayers you can send, but I'm not looking for sympathy, I'm not looking for you to feel bad for me because I have faith."
The former Georgia Tech football star has been a professional wrestler for eight years and has become one of WWE's most popular stars. He told the crowd on Monday that he had been diagnosed with leukemia for the first time at age 22 during a difficult period of his life.
"Very quickly, I was able to put him in remission, but I will not lie: it was the most difficult time of my life," he said. "I did not have a job, I did not have any money, I did not have a house and I had a baby on the way, and the Football was finished with me.
"But you want to know who gave me a chance? The team that gave me a chance was WWE."
Anoa'i, whose announcement canceled the WWE's universal championship, promised to return to action soon.
"This is by no means a retirement speech," he said. "I'm going to beat that, and I'll come back, so you'll see me very, very soon."
