Marietta students national beat ACT average, sit just below Ga. Average

More Marietta students than usual took this year, and they did better than the national average for the first time in three years, the school system announced.

The average composite score for the 2017-18 year of a high school Marietta High School was 21.2 out of a maximum 36. The average of this year was 21.4 and the national average was 20.8.

Marietta's average last year was 20.8 and 21.1 year before that.

The Wall Street Journal reported that higher U.S. high school graduates than usual have taken college-entrance exams to read and write a 14-year low.

The average ACT score for students admitted to the University of Georgia this year is 30, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

The number of Marietta students taking the test from 155 in 2016 to 210 this most recent year.

One rising senior, Andy Chinuntdet, aced the shebang.

Less than a tenth of a test takers do so, the ACT has said.

With that perfect score and his GPA of 4.5, he hopes to study aerospace engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Georgia Tech, MCS said, before moving on to a job at SpaceX or NASA.
