The newspaper claimed that Elizabeth had shared her anti-European views with Nick Clegg, then Deputy Prime Minister. Clegg said the report was "nonsense".
The palace filed a complaint with the guardian of the press and insisted that the queen was politically neutral. The watchdog ruled that the title was misleading, but the newspaper was next.
Although the queen reigns over the political fray, she has shown a card or two during her long reign. During the Scottish referendum campaign, she told a fortunate in front of a church that the British should think "very carefully about the future," which some interpret as a support for Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom.
