Mayor Janice Curtis said she learned from a reporter that the $ 1.537 billion Mega Millions draw ticket was sold in her city.
According to the mayor, the reporter asked, "What do you think of what's happening in the little old Simpsonville?" And I fell to the water. I had no idea. Can you believe it? A note! Right here! "
Simpsonville is the kind of city where agricultural fields give way to real estate developers. The city has grown from 18,000 to 22,000 as a result of the encroachment of the suburbs of Greenville over the past seven years.
The mayor loves his residents.
"We are such a warm community, if anyone needs something, we are here," she said. "If someone needs to celebrate, and that's certainly an opportunity to celebrate, we're here."
The lottery officials did not give any details about who bought the winning ticket, whether they live in Simpsonville or just past the KC Mart # 7 and decided to stop.
The market, with its six gas pumps, is a junction far from the highway and used by locals who go to their homes or work.
People gathered at the store on Wednesday to take photos with the owner or to see if lightning will hit twice by buying tickets for the $ 620 million Powerball draw.
Owner CJ Patel was shaking and had goose bumps when he had learned that his establishment had sold the winning ticket, he told CNN affiliate WYFF in Greenville.
Patel's store is getting $ 50,000 for ticket sales and he says he "will be doing a good job with this money".
As for the ticket holder?
"Whoever wins, we hope this money spends this money locally and does good things for the community," Patel said.
Jason Hanna from CNN contributed to this report.
