The millionaire meat exporter of Kanpur faces numerous investigations ranging from tax evasion to money laundering and bribery. He is also accused of spending significant sums in hawala and other modes of operation to compel government officials, including IWC officers and politicians.
His name was mentioned for the first time in 2014, when it was discovered that he had visited the residence of IWC Chief Ranjit Sinha at least 70 times in more than 15 months. Sathish Babu Sana, a businessman based in Hyderabad, who is now in the fight between Verma and Asthana, reportedly told the Law Enforcement Directorate (ED) that he had paid Rs 1 crore to Qureshi for a bail for his friend in a CBI case through Sinha.
The Supreme Court strongly criticized Sinha for meeting with defendants or suspects and went under the CBI scanner. The charges against Sinha have revived calls for reform of the IWC and increased monitoring of its operation. Sinha, who led the IWC from 2012 to 2014, has repeatedly denied all charges.

Later in 2014, it turned out that Qureshi had been exchanging messages with another IWC director, AP Singh, who had led the agency from 2010 to 2012. The Income Tax Service and the ED examined the issue initially and in February of the previous year, the IWC had also a case against Singh to probe his ties with Qureshi. The charges cost Singh his position as a "member" in the Union Public Service Commission when he had to step down. Singh also denied all the charges against him and said the IWC had not even made contact with him yet.
