KUALA LUMPUR: The money involved in the six counts of breach of trust that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Dr. Tan Sri Irwan Mohd Serigar Abdullah jointly condemned was aimed at "only compliance with obligations "said the lawyer of the former prime minister.

Tan Sri, Dr Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said that Najib did not even benefit from a single sen of the amount mentioned in the six counts.

The former prime minister and the former secretary general of the Treasury are jointly indicted for six counts of criminal breach of trust, for a total of RM6,636bil.

"The first two charges are totally unfounded because the decision taken by himself, as well as by Dr. Mohd Irwan, was for the good of the nation and the good of the public.

"This is to prevent a default trigger that would have been disastrous for Malaysia's economy," Dr Muhammad Shafee told the Court of Sessions Thursday (October 25th), adding that funds went to two different projects.

The first two counts of indictment were committed on 21 December 2016 and concerned amounts of 1.2 billion RMB and 655 million RMB.

For the third charge, Najib and Dr. Mohd Irwan allegedly committed a TBI on August 3, 2017 on an amount of RMB 220 million, a management fee allowance from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The fourth charge concerns an allocation amount of RMB 1.3 billion for grants and cash grants, which would have been committed on August 10, 2017.

The fifth and sixth charges were allegedly committed on 23 August and 18 December of the same year and concerned RMB 1.95 billion (RMB 1,261 billion) and RMB 2 billion, respectively.

"Charges three to six are even more interesting, these are related to the payment due to the IPIC (International Petroleum Investment Company).

"Once again, it was money initially allocated for one purpose but in priority, being revised in a phase of emergency and distress. The goal is to address the issue of IPIC, "said Dr. Muhammad Shafee.

He said that there had been no dishonest intent and that there could be no allegation against Najib of this nature.

"In fact, the team of lawyers is delighted to read these accusations and we look forward to defending ourselves.

"My client believes that these charges are atrocious and he looks forward to the charges in a full trial," he said.
