A gunman shot dead Wednesday afternoon two people in a Kentucky supermarket, before an armed spectator shot him, prompting him to run away, police said.
The gunman, whose name was not immediately revealed, was arrested shortly after, near the Kroger, said Chief Sam Rogers of the Jeffersontown Police Department at a press conference.
Neither the gunman nor the armed spectator were injured during the match. Although the investigation is in its infancy, it appears that the two victims of the shooting were "random," he said.
"I have no direct knowledge of what the suspect said, if at all, at this point," said Chief Rogers, adding that the police knew no reason.
In a report, Kroger said he was "shocked and saddened by the shooting".
"Thanks to the quick response from the local police department, the suspect has been apprehended and our store is secure," the company said. "We cooperate with the forces of order and participate in their investigations. Our store is closed and will reopen at the end of the investigation. "
Police in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, a suburb of Louisville, said they received reports of shots being fired at the supermarket around 3:00 pm Wednesday and quickly sent officers to the scene.
Investigators determined that after entering the supermarket, the gunman had fired several times at a male victim; he then went out and shot several times at a female victim, whom he met on the parking lot. The two victims, whose names were not immediately published, were declared dead at the scene, Chief Rogers said.
The gunman then met "an armed citizen", who "attacked the suspect with shots in the parking lot," said the chief. He did not provide any additional information about this man. The gunman then ran, but he was quickly stopped by police on a nearby main thoroughfare.
Chief Rogers stated that several law enforcement agencies, including federal authorities, participated in the investigation.
"At this point, we are looking at all the factors related to this shooting," he said.
Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Senate majority and one of Kentucky's senators, said Wednesday that he and his staff "were watching the situation closely."
"As we continue to learn about the events that have taken place, Elaine and I are asking the entire community of Louisville to join us in praying for the victims and their families," he said. in a statement, referring to his wife, Elaine Chao.
In an interview with the local WDRB television channel, Kathy Mayhall said she was at the store's checkout when she heard "bang, bang, bang, bang" really really loud. the shots continued.
Ms. Mayhall stated that the shootings inside the store had taken place in her "right back corner" and that she was "maybe eight lanes away."

Eric Deacon, who was also shopping Wednesday, told Wave 3 News that he had heard gunshots and was hidden on the floor. A man overtook him and passed the Kroger's door, he said, while another man pursued him.
Mr. Deacon said The Louisville Courier Journal said the shooter had an "empty stare" on his face as he approached the corner.
The two gunmen then started firing at the car park when the victim was hit, Deacon said.

In a report released Wednesday night, the Jeffersontown Police Department said the crime scene had been cleaned up, but that the supermarket would remain closed until Friday morning.
