The Israeli Air Defense System Iron Dome was activated and launched an interceptor missile, but no interception took place, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). No one was injured by the rocket.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the two main militant factions in Gaza, have denied firing the rocket and no complaints of responsibility have been received.
In response, the Israeli army said that fighter jets had hit eight military targets in three Hamas complexes in the Gaza Strip, including a training center, an arms manufacturing site and a storage site.
No one was injured in the air strikes.
Israel has declared that it holds Hamas accountable "for all events taking place in the Gaza Strip and emanated from it", adding that Hamas "would bear the consequences of the terror it has waged against Israeli civilians ".
Israeli media now suggest that a crush could have triggered rocket fire last week. Earlier this week, Israel Radio quoted Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked as saying: "According to what we know, Hamas does not intend to fire rockets", and Times of Israel, quoted by an unnamed minister, said: "It would not have been fair to go to war on the weather."
